The teeth are the hardest substance in the human body. The third molar, also known as the wisdom teeth, usually erupt between the age 17 and 21. A matured adult’s mouth normally has 28-32 teeth, but wisdom teeth arise inside the mouth will face some discomfort.
So this problem has to be rectified. During your check up with the dentist may take an orthopantomogram x-ray to study the exact problem of the wisdom teeth. The result further suggests you for removal of wisdom teeth.
There are different types of impacted wisdom teeth, depending on the way that the tooth has grown through and they are:
- Distal impaction: where the wisdom tooth turns away from the tooth next to it and becomes stuck in that position.
- Vertical impaction: where the tooth grows straight down but gets lodged against the tooth next to it.
- Horizontal impaction: where the tooth stretches horizontally and pushes against the tooth next to it.
- Mesial impaction: where the tooth grows and leans towards the front of the mouth.
Your dentist may suggest that your wisdom teeth needed to be pull out even before problems develop. This is done to shun an unbearable painful or more complicated extraction that might have to be done a few years later. Removal is easier in young people, when the wisdom teeth roots are not yet fully developed and the bone is less thick. In older people, recovery and healing may consume time.
Using local anesthesia the wisdom tooth and tissue are numbed. With the appropriate surgical instruments the tissue and bone that is covering the tooth will be removed. Extraction instruments are used to loosen the tooth, once the tooth is loose enough; the dentist removes it with dental forceps.
